Christmas in Madrid

Christmas is one of the most beautiful times of the year to enjoy a different Madrid. If you are learning Spanish in Madrid, you can't miss the festive period. When the Christmas lights are on, walking on the Gran Via or Puerta del Sol is essential. The streets take on a totally different colour and you can enjoy numerous shows. The Christmas lights are impressive and give a special touch to the centre of Madrid.

A good idea to fill your time away from your Spanish classes is to enjoy all the possibilities that Madrid has to offer. You can't miss the Christmas market they put on in the Plaza Mayor. It is one of Madrid's treasures. Lots of stands with countless Christmas objects. You'll find everything from crib figures to wigs and hats. It's a tradition to buy a hat with a wig and walk around downtown like this.

From December 9th to January 5th, in Plaza de España, you will be able to enjoy a typical handicraft market. The flea markets abound at Christmas!

If you have little brothers and sisters, and they come to see you at Christmas, you have to take them to "Cortilandia". It's one of the great Christmas shows in Madrid. It is made on the wall of El Corte Inglés. If you have no siblings, it is also suitable for adults. It's very funny and it reminds us that the Christmas period is upon us. Of course, you will have to look at the timetable and book in advance... because it is always full!

Many churches and cultural centres showcase cribs that you can visit. For example, they put a crib in the CentroCentro Cibeles and International cribs at the Casa del Lector in Matadero Madrid.

Throughout Madrid you can enjoy numerous ice rinks. Or, to finish Christmas in style, you can see the Three Wise Men's Cavalcade. A typical one that closes after Christmas.
