Activities to enjoy autumn in Madrid

In autumn Madrid dresses in orange and brown. Many poems have been written over time about the change that Retiro undergoes each year, changing its greens for yellows, and its boat rides for hot coffees under the afternoon sun on a Sunday.

Visiting Madrid in autumn

To answer when it is best to visit Madrid, you need to ask another question: what do you want to visit? If your main interest is museums, any time of year is good. Due to its climatic logic, the best time to visit Madrid if you enjoy sightseeing and walking around are autumn and spring.

Are you going to study? In our case, our Spanish school for foreigners is open all year long, so you are welcome to enroll whenever you want. We particularly love autumn, since our location is not a coincidence! We love the area, and we can’t be happier to welcome you here! You can be sure that studying with us, you’ll also fall in love with this central and very nice district (“Chamberi”). You’ll enjoy strolling in this traditional area with an aristocratic architectural flair as much as we do.

For example, you won’t want to miss Plaza de Olavide (190 m from the school), a nice landscaped square surrounded by terraces: an amazing place to meet friends and eat tapas after your Intensive Spanish course. Between lessons, you can take a bite at Alma Nomad bakery (C/ Sta. Feliciana, 10) or order a cappuccino to go at ÖSS Kaffe Madrid (C/de Manuel Cortina, 1). There’s even a paella restaurant around the corner! (Calle de Sta Engracia, 43).

You can also have a walk on the largest green area in Chamberi: Santander Park. On 120,000m2, this recently renewed park combines vegetation with modern sports infrastructure (artificial turf football pitches, paddle tennis courts, and a 1,200 m circular tartan track for running) (1600 m from the school).

Although spring involves multiple holidays (Holy Week, Dos de Mayo and San Isidro), hosts 20 °C days and Retiro is in its maximum floral splendor, the Book Fair is held, and May may seem the most attractive, according to a 2022 statistic the month with the most tourists Madrid received was October!

Holidays

The bank holidays on 12 October may be one of the reasons for the increase in visitors. In addition to the thousands of university students going back to school (although they shouldn't count as tourists, they bring life to the streets!) Another event that seems to have established itself as a tradition is Halloween. Amusement parks focus on this theme and there are even pumpkin fields near Madrid.

Another way to learn Spanish is by watching films or going to the theatre. And, in the Chamberí district, you'll have plenty of options. The Teatros del Canal are perfect for everything from classical texts and modern pieces to concerts, dance, flamenco, zarzuela, opera, circus or cabaret. In addition, nearby you will find the Teatro de la Abadía, the Teatro Galileo and the Teatros Luchana, the result of the rehabilitation of the old Luchana cinemas into theatres.

Very close to the school you’ll find many movie theater with different styles: Cine PazCine Proyecciones, Sala Berlanga which screens Spanish, Latin American, European and signature films), the charming Pequeño Cine Estudio (next to Quevedo and which offers classical films), Verdi Cinemas (in original version, in Calle Bravo Murillo) and the Conde Duque Verdi Alberto Aguilera and Conde Duque Santa Engracia.

Come to take a course with us and enjoy our district in your free time!
