It doesn't happen often, but when it does and you are a student of Spanish as a Foreign Language in the city, you may find yourself at a crossroads: what to do in Madrid when it rains?
Weather in Madrid
First of all, we are going to comment on the climate that the region has. Madrid is located in the central area of the Iberian Peninsula. Geographically, it limits to the north and west with the autonomous communities of Castilla y León and to the east and south with Castilla-La Mancha.
Most of the territory is subject to Mediterranean-type climates. From the warmest and driest in the lowest areas to the coldest and humid in the mountain regions.
Normally, we can see intense and emphatic blue skies. The climate is usually dry and without much precipitation throughout the year. But “when it rains, it rains.” In recent years, tourists and students passing through have been surprised by more frequent summer storms. Than before, due to the changes in the global climate that we all know. On those rare occasions, a lot of water can fall in a short time, causing laughter and rushing.
The summers are hot and the winters are cold, but whatever time you choose to come, you have a good chance of enjoying one of the famous skies painted so many times by Velázquez.
Things to do when it rains in Madrid
We have selected a series of activities to do inside if you have to spend a day off when it rains: you can leave the academy and do one of these activities!
Take note, grab the umbrella and get ready to enjoy Madrid 😉
- drink a good cup of hot chocolate with churros at Chocolatería San Ginés, the oldest in Madrid (address: Pasadizo de San Ginés, 5) or at Chocolatería Valor (address: Calle del Postigo de San Martin, 7).
- Visit the majestic Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral, which is right opposite. It has more than 3,000 rooms and 130,000 square meters (18 football fields)!, making it one of the largest palaces in the world. There are guided tours.
- Learn curiosities from the beginnings of space exploration at the Planetarium (Parque Tierno Galván, Av. del Planetario, 16). There are temporary exhibitions and an educational projection in the dome.
- Throw “anti-stress ax blows”.
Without a doubt, the perfect plan to release stress after a long week of learning advanced verbal conjugations. These are ax throwing rooms in Madrid, one in the Atocha area and another in Cuatro Caminos where the activity consists of throwing real axes at a target. If you don't know how to handle an axe, like most people, don't worry because before starting the shooting session, a short course of about 10 minutes is given where they explain how to do it and a series of basic safety rules.
-Take the tour of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium
If you like soccer you cannot miss the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, one of the temples for soccer lovers.
It doesn't matter if you've already been to the stadium watching a game. On this tour of the Santiago Bernabéu you will be able to visit parts of the stadium that are impossible for a fan to access. Totally recommended!
