Spanish pronunciation rules<\/h2>

In Spanish there are only 5 vowels and between 17-19 consonant phonemes, which makes things easier. However, there are a number of rules you need to know to avoid certain mistakes:

The vowels: Spanish vowels have only one sound (\/a\/, \/e\/, \/i\/, \/o\/ and \/u\/) and are always pronounced the same, clearly and without the mouth relaxing. Vowels are joined in groups of 2 or 3 in the same syllable to form diphthongs and triphthongs, which must be pronounced quickly and correctly. E.g.: Auto, aire, aurora, cuento, ruido, buey, actu\u00e1is, despreci\u00e9is.<\/p>

Examples of Spanish pronunciation difficulties<\/h3>

Spanish pronunciation of C and Z: C (\/k\/) is pronounced CA (house) QUE (cheese) QUI (fifteen) CO (eat) CU (four). These phonemes are pronounced by opening the mouth wide. For example: cami\u00f3n, querer, quintal, cosa, cuarzo. Z (\/\u03b8\/) is pronounced ZA (shoe) CE (center) CI (hundred) ZO (zoo) and ZU (juice). They are pronounced by bringing the tongue to the teeth, they are dental sounds. Example: zagu\u00e1n, cenicero, cielo, zona o zumbido.<\/p>

G and J: It is different the sound \/ \u03c7 \/ as ‘ham’ to the sound \/g\/ as ‘cat’. GE and GI are pronounced as \/ \u03c7 \/ Example: \u2018gente, \u2018girasol\u2019. With\/ \u03c7 \/: JA (jam\u00f3n), JE \/ GE (jefe \/ gente), JI \/ GI (jirafa \/ girasol), JO (joven) y JU (jugar). Con \/g\/: GA (gato), GUE (juguete), GUI (guitarra), GO (gol) and GU (guapo).<\/p>

The C\/S sounds: the seseo<\/em>. A very common error among Spanish learners is to change the CE CI sound for SE SI. For example, saying «servesa» instead of «cerveza» or «haser» instead of «hacer». This phenomenon is called «seseo»: pronouncing the s sound instead of the z sound or the c sound before the e or i. It\u00b4s very common in some areas of Andalusia, the Canary Islands and Latin America.<\/p>

R can be pronounced softly (pera, ahora, aura) or strongly when it is double (rr). Example: perro, arroba, arriba. Also when it goes at the beginning of a word: roto, raro, rito or after L, N and S: alrededor, enredo, israelita.\u00a0<\/span>To pronounce the strong R we must put the tongue on the roof of the mouth and make it vibrate. For the soft R we must bring it towards the roof of the mouth but only touch it lightly.<\/span><\/p>
